Easy Homemade Everything Bagels

EASY HOMEMADE EVERYTHING BAGELS

Who doesn’t love a good everything bagel? I mean seriously? One of my favorite breakfasts has to be cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, red onion and capers all stacked high on top a thick everything bagel. The flavor and texture of each ingredient really make this combo a BREAKFAST MASTERPIECE. I love indulging in an everything bagel alongside a large iced coffee. Nothing like a bagel and coffee to set your morning straight.

Everything bagels have to be one the best bagel flavors out there. Dare I say it????? Probably the best flavor out there. So, if you happen to be an everything bagel lover you must already know about Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel seasoning, right?

(** GASPS IF YOU SAY YOU NO**)

You NEED this seasoning…

Well, if not go pick up a bottle or two from your local Trader Joe’s because it’s one of the best products they’ve ever come up with (I know I’m not alone on this one). This seasoning has all of the wonderful flavors and ingredients of an everything bagel jammed packed in a little bottle, ready to be sprinkled on top of just about anything. I personally love dumping (yes, dumping) some on top of my eggs, avocado, toast, omelets, salads, sandwiches, wraps etc. It’s super versatile and can really make a meal POP. It’s the key ingredient in these bagels, so trust me you won’t want to skimp out on it.

Only 6 Ingredients!

These everything bagels are super easy because they only contain 6 simple ingredients. Each ingredient you most likely have on hand and they only take 20ish minutes to bake. You can have yourself a baked stack of everything bagels fresh from the oven in under 30 minutes. Top with your favorite cream cheese, eggs and bacon or butter and jelly.

How do you make bagels in the oven?

I know traditionally bagels are sort of complicated to make. They require mixing dough, forming bagels, boiling and baking and to be honest that’s more than I feel like doing on a Saturday morning. So, skip the previously mentioned instructions and bake these simple bagels with me! All you do is mix the flour, yogurt, baking soda, and onion powder together until a sticky dough forms. Then you roll out your dough onto a lightly floured surface creating a long dough log. Cut the dough log into three equal parts and form into a circle or bagel shape. Place each bagel on top a parchment paper lined baking sheet, brush with egg wash and top with everything but the seasoning. Bake for 20-25 minutes on 375 Fahrenheit and there you are! Fresh everything bagels! I like to cut mine in half and toast for 4-5 minutes while prepping my toppings. It’s a great change up to your typical bagel and it tastes SO FRESH.

One thing to note- my bagels didn’t turn out as pretty as in these photos. I actually cut more of a circle in the middle of each one for a better presentation. Just know they still taste incredible despite the centers baking together. If you want a little circle in the middle of each bagel, simply use a small knife to carve one out. It literally took me 30 seconds to do this.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • Whole wheat flour (see notes for sub)
  • Baking soda
  • Onion powder
  • Plain full fat Greek yogurt
  • Egg
  • Trader Joe’s everything but the bagel seasoning

Servings 3 bagels

Equipment

  • parchment paper
  • baking sheet
  • Mixing Bowl
  • pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup whole milk plain greek yogurt
  • Trader Joe's everything but the bagel seasoning

egg wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and onion powder. Then add the yogurt and combine. Stir with a rubber spatula until a sticky dough forms (you may need to use your hands).
  • On a lightly floured surface dump out your sticky dough and begin rolling into a log shape. Make sure the entire log is equal in thickness.Cut into three equal parts and use each piece to form three circular bagels. Set each dough bagel onto parchment lined baking sheet and begin prepping your egg wash.
  • Make your egg wash by whisking 1 large egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl. Using a handheld brush, dip the brush into the egg wash and brush over top each bagel. Immediately follow this step with pouring “everything but the” seasoning on top of each bagel. Add as much or as little seasoning as you want. I prefer extra seasoning.
  • Place your bagels in the oven to bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing in half. After slicing your bagel in half, toast each slice and enjoy with your favorite toppings. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Notes

Flour- Feel free to evenly sub out whole wheat flour with all purpose, oat, or almond flour. If using almond flour, I recommend adding an additional teaspoon of baking soda.
Yogurt- if dairy free, you can sub out whole milk Greek yogurt for coconut yogurt. Keep in mind, there may be a slight coconut flavor. I haven’t tried using cashew yogurt yet, so if you do please let me know how it works out.
Egg- the egg wash is important in this recipe because it creates a nice solidified top for the seasoning to stick to. If you don’t have eggs/ don’t eat eggs you can add the seasoning to the dough right after mixing. Simply dump in as much seasoning as you desire to the sticky dough, stirring until evenly distributed and then rolling the doll out into a log on a lightly floured surface.
Everything but the bagel seasoning- There are off brand seasonings that are very similar to this one from Trader joe’s. You can easily use one from simply organics or Wegman’s brand.
